A two-year stay by the Galacticans and the colonials on what appears to be the perfect planet for rebuilding their civilization comes to an abrupt end: the dying sun of Paradis dramatically begins its contraction phase, forcing them to make a hurried exit back into space. Discovering that several of their refurbished ships are incapable of deep-space travel, the fleet returns to Paradis for repairs--just in time for the sudden catastrophic destruction of the entire planet.

When it becomes clear that the Cylons are responsible, Apollo, Tigh and Athena make the painful decision to leave one-third of the fleet behind in order to save the rest.

Deciding who will live and who will die creates an impending mutiny, as even Baltar and Starbuck find themselves among those chosen in a lottery to remain behind and face certain death. Given the reality of losing each other forever, Cassi and Starbuck must confront their unrequited love--a situation that threatens to destroy the longstanding friendship of Apollo and Starbuck.

But unknown to the Galacticans is that those left behind will have to face a new generation of Cylons, who have evolved into the most deadly creatures the ragtag fleet of colonists have ever confronted.
