It looks at the recurring plot devices of 'zombie flesh eaters returned from the dead', and the Third World cannibal genre that created the shocking mock-documentary CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST - an acknowledged influence on THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. EATEN ALIVE! also analyses the Italian art film-makers who employed cannibalism as a metaphor satirising society and religion, in films such as Pasolini's PIGSTY, and assesses the impact of George A. Romero's vivid US flesh-eating zombie movie DAWN OF THE DEAD. Executively produced by Italy's Dario Argento, it spawned a whole genre of Italian films, the bizarre swansong being 1994's sick comedy DELLAMORTE DELLAMORE, starring Rupert Everett as a necrophiliac cemetary attendant.

EATEN ALIVE! contains a whole host of irreverent but informative contributions, from legendary figures of the horror genre such as David J. Schow, 'splatterpunk' author and screenwriter of THE CROW, ultraviolent cult-movie maker Jim Van Bebber, and horror novelist Ramsey Campbell. Further contributions include film critic and science fiction author Kim Newman, Lloyd Kaufman, president of Troma films, and gothic horror expert Professor Christopher Frayling.
